Economic Recovery And Falling Unemployment And The Right Honourable Member For;sedgefield
EDM number 1133 in 1994-95, proposed by Allan Stewart on 16/05/1995.
That this House takes note of the remarks made by the the Right honourable Member for Sedgefield during his speech to the British Chambers of Commerce Annual Conference in Aberdeen on Friday 12th May; 'Again, I shall be frank. It is foolish to say everything is bad with the British economy and that all the British Government has done is wrong, and I don't' 'The United Kingdom has had two years of reasonable growth' 'One result is that unemployment has fallen from three million and there are some signs, though small, of employment growth'; contrasts this latter comment with the remarks of the honourable Member for Dunfermline East who said 'I make one Budget forecast - that, after the budget, unemployment will rise this month, next month and for months afterwards', Official Report, 17th March 1993, column 290; recognises that since the remarks of the honourable Member for Dunfermline East two years ago unemployment has fallen month on month, down by over 600,000; and welcomes the acknowledgement of this fact by the Right honourable Member for Sedgefield.
