BBC Taking Liberties Broadcast

EDM number 1129 in 1994-95, proposed by Matthew Taylor on 15/05/1995.

That this House draws the Government's attention to the BBC programme 'Taking Liberties' to be broadcast on Tuesday 16th May highlighting the case of Cornish law lecturer Keith Tregenna who was accused of a serious sexual assault by another staff member of his further education college; notes that the college investigated the matter as an internal disciplinary case, on the advice of lawyers and with the approval of the Department of Education; expresses concern that any employer should seek to judge such serious accusations themselves, especially when no formal complaint is made to the police; and believes that Ministers should urgently review the position relating to the role of any employers in regard to investigating such serious allegations, where the highest standards of police expertise, and the tested procedures of the courts, should be expected by the public, by the alleged assailant and by the alleged victim.

This motion has been signed by a total of 17 MPs.
