Need For A Negotiated Settlement In Kashmir
EDM number 1126 in 1994-95, proposed by George Galloway on 15/05/1995.
That this House notes the lamentable violence at the 650 year old mausoleum, the Shrine of Sheikh Nooruddin Wali, Patron Saint of Kashmir which saw the shrine, a nearby mosque and many houses burn to a cinder, and saw the deaths of yet more Kashmiri guerrillas and Indian soldiers; notes that the apparently endless violence in Jammu and Kashmir is a result of the still unresolved destiny of then population there; and, mindful of the demands of the United Nations resolutions on Kashmir and the United Nations Charter itself, calls upon Her Majesty's Government and the Commonwealth to launch a peace initiative, bringing India, Pakistan and the Kashmiri leadership to the negotiating table to construct the basis for a plebiscite in which the people of Jammu and Kashmir may determine their own future.
