Composition Of The Animals Procedures Committee
EDM number 1060 in 1994-95, proposed by Harry Cohen on 01/05/1995.
That this House notes that of the 14 members of the Animals Procedures Committee, 11 have a current or recent involvement in the vivisection industry whilst the other three have backgrounds in philosophy or law and do not represent animal welfare concerns; further notes that the only animal welfare representative is the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal's Anthony Suckling who was himself a vivisector until 1991; and is further concerned that on the Committee are three representatives of contract testing laboratories and two representatives of pressure groups campaigning in favour of animal research; and considers that the composition of the Animals Procedures Committee is perversely distorted in favour of animal experimenters and not representative of the public interest and should be changed to be more representative of all the interests on this matter including those without a predisposition to approve animal experiments in virtually all circumstances.
