Parthenon Marbles
EDM number 1058 in 1994-95, proposed by Tony Banks on 01/05/1995.
That this House calls upon Her Majesty's Government to co-operate with other European governments in an international effort to return to Greece all material removed from the Parthenon; acknowledges that the Parthenon is one of the world's most significant monuments and a symbol of western democracy; believes Her Majesty's Government should return the integral parts removed from the Parthenon by Lord Elgin and now located in the British Museum; and further believes that such an initiative would inspire other countries to return similar material and that the restoration of the Parthenon would be a most fitting and imaginative welcome to the twenty-first century.
