Leeds Infirmary Breast Care Unit
EDM number 103 in 1994-95, proposed by John Battle on 23/11/1994.
That this House believes that wards devoted specifically to the care of breast cancer should be actively encouraged, as recommended in Dr Kenneth Calman's report on the commissioning of cancer services, and that the closure of such units, as in the case of ward 62A at Leeds General Infirmary, is a tragedy for women undergoing breast cancer operations and who now suffer indignity and humiliation in mixed-sex wards and are forced to discuss very sensitive issues with their families and husbands within earshot of male patients; and believes that the excellent work carried out at Leeds and in other breast care units should be allowed to continue in line with best practice in modern medical care.
