Council Of Europe Plaque Of Honour Award To Cockermouth

EDM number 1028 in 1994-95, proposed by DN Campbell-Savours on 26/04/1995.

That this House congratulates the people of Cockermouth and its twin town Marvejols in France on being awarded the prestigious Council of Europe plaque of Honour for outstanding efforts to propagate the idea of European unity; notes Cockermouth's previous awards of the European Diploma in 1991 and the Flag of Honour in 1992 demonstrating the area's prolonged commitment to Europe; pays tribute to the notable contribution made by Mr David Bertram, Cockermouth's Town Clerk and Secretary of the Twinning Committee, in ensuring the success of twinning; notes the success of cultural exchanges that have brought figures in European literature, dance and scholarship to Cockermouth and provided exchange opportunities for local musicians, singers and other artists; notes sports and educational exchanges that have helped lift the aspirations of young people and the example set by the construction of the Eurotrail for the Disabled enhancing access to a local river environment with the help of young people from nine different countries; recognises the value of participation by members of the Chambers of Commerce in both towns which has resulted in direct and tangible economic benefits, not least the use of Cumbria slate in a major new leisure centre near Marvejols; notes the naming of a recreational area in Marvejols after Cockermouth and the creation of Marvejols Park in Cockermouth in honour of the twinning; and celebrates this demonstration of practical measures to bring about direct communication between ordinary people in different countries as the best way to build a truly democratic, modern Europe.
