Powers To Prevent River Pollution

That this House recognises the important work done by the National Rivers Authority to control river pollution, but is concerned that the proposed Environment Agency due to be established by the Environment Bill currently before Parliament, and which will take over the pollution control functions of the NRA, will, in Clause 7 of the Bill, be given lesser powers than the NRA with which to control pollution; notes that English Nature, the National Rivers Authority and The Broads Authority have expressed their concern at this proposal; and hopes that the Bill will be amended in order to ensure that the existing and stronger pollution control powers are retained and given to the proposed Environment Agency.
