Forests

That this House views with alarm the continuing rapid destruction of tropical forests; and urges United Kingdom Government representatives at the Commission for Sustainable Development meeting in New York to press for the adoption of an approach to this problem based on the principles that action to protect tropical forests should be taken urgently under existing agreements, including the Biodiversity Convention, proposals to begin a negotiating process designed to lead to a forests convention should not be allowed to delay such action, the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation should not be entrusted with a major role in the process of devising such a Convention nor in its implementation, any international action should address the issue of extreme inequality in the distribution of land ownership as one of the root causes of deforestation, additional funding should be made available by developed states in order to compensate tropical states losing income as a result of refraining from deforestation and states with temperate forests should play a full part within their own territories in conserving the world's forests.
