Numbers Of The Imprisoned Mentally Ill

EDM number 1009 in 1994-95, proposed by Paul Flynn on 20/04/1995.

That this House call for an investigation of the astonishing fivefold increase, from 141 to 776, in eight years in the number of prisoners transferred to mental institutions; notes that the main increase coincides with new Care in the Community policies and involves prisoners awaiting sentence; and regrets the additional gratuitious suffering inflicted on thousands of sick and confused people.
