Harassment Of Human Rights Observers In Turkey

That this House is disturbed to learn of the harassment, intimidation and in some instances arrest or detention by the Turkish authorities of human rights observers currently in Turkey to observe the local elections; notes that those who have been harassed include British parliamentarians from the other place, the representative of His Eminence the Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster and several British journalists; further notes that delegations from other countries have been victims of violence inflicted by the Turkish authorities; believes this is further evidence of Turkey's scant regard for human rights; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to initiate proceedings against Turkey through the Council of Europe and other international bodies. (Relevant registered interest declared).
