Turkish Mps Facing Death Penalty

That this House is shocked to learn that the Turkish State Prosecutor, Nusret Demiral, has demanded the death penalty under Article 125 of the Penal Code for the Members of Parliament who were arrested recently; notes that this Article has only been used in the past for armed crimes and leaders of armed organisations and that those currently under arrest are not accused of any acts of violence; further notes that their crime appears to be one of making statements and speeches, and in one instance proposing a motion within Parliament, asserting the rights of minorities in Turkey; and calls on the Prime Minister to make an urgent, direct and personal approach to the Turkish Prime Minister, Mrs Tansu Ciller, for the charges to be dropped and for the rights of MPs to be restored.
