Future Of The Design Council

That this House recognises the value to British industry of good design which is promoted by the Design Council's service to industry and that the effective use of design leads to products with higher specification, customer appeal, innovative features and value for money; notes that the Design Council helps to raise the awareness of manufacturing industry to the importance of competitive world class products and provides independent and unbiased assistance to diagnose problems and to identify the necessary specialist design help at a time when many organisations do not appreciate that it is the product design and development process which largely determines their ability to become competitive, affecting a company's cost base and its market performance; is concerned that the use of Business Links will lead to a dispersal of the accumulated expertise of services to industry which is neither desirable or appropriate as Business Links are several years away from being full functional; and calls on the Department of Trade and Industry to retain the expertise and coherence of service to industry by keeping it as a whole and actively examining ways to expand on its current excellent input to efficiency and wealth creation.
