Stephen Spielberg And The British Film Industry
EDM number 943 in 1993-94, proposed by Hugh Bayley on 23/03/1994.
That this House congratulates Steven Spielberg and his production staff on gaining seven academy awards for the film Schindler's List; recalls that he spent well over one hundred million pounds in producing the Indiana Jones and other films in the United Kingdom at Elstree Studios; reminds the House that he supported the Save Elstree Studios campaign when filming Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and stated on a visit to the House of Commons that British film technicians were the best in the world; bitterly regrets that the Conservative Government left the film industry to market forces which have turned much of Elstree's studios into a shopping mall, leaving only three sound stages out of 10 at a time of increased use of other British film studios; and further regrets the lost opportunity of retaining the valuable support of one of the world's leading film-makers but expresses the hope that the remnants of Elstree studios can still be saved for future film-making.
