Deregulation And Fire Safety

That this House is concerned that the DTI's Task Force report about the future of fire safety was completed and presented to another government department without consulting any fire authority or fire service associations, who are concerned that proposals should be advanced so far without being discussed with those who have the enforcement responsibility and experience; is also alarmed that the Government intends to repeal the Fire Precautions Act 1971 which would diminish the fire safety and fire prevention role of the fire service and move towards a system of self-regulation; calls on the DTI to release in full the Task Force's report to all fire authorities and fire safety representative bodies; and asks for a commitment that there will be no repeal of the Fire Precautions Act and that any changes to the Act will only be made by using primary legislation so the issue can be fully debated publicly and in both Houses.
