Ending The Trade In Toxic Waste
EDM number 883 in 1993-94, proposed by Nick Ainger on 16/03/1994.
That this House agrees with the Archbishop of York and other eminent clergy that the export of hazardous waste to developing countries represents an unacceptable abuse and exploitation of poverty; notes that the Government's own White Paper, This Common Inheritance, strongly condemns the practice of 'in effect finding cheap disposal routes (for example in developing countries) with scant regard for environmental consequences'; calls on the Secretary of State for the Environment to meet the commitment made in the White Paper to make Britain self-sufficient in waste disposal and therefore support the Danish Government's proposal to close the loophole in the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Waste and its Disposal and thus bring the trade in hazardous waste to an end.
This motion has been signed by a total of 92 MPs.
