Kurdish Peace Proposals For North West Kurdistan (South East Turkey)
EDM number 858 in 1993-94, proposed by Colin Pickthall on 15/03/1994.
That this House is concerned about the continued violation of human rights by the government of Turkey, which includes mass killings of the civilian population in North West Kurdistan, destruction and depopulation of villages, torture, and the arrest and detention of elected Members of the Turkish Parliament; welcomes the proposal, made by the Secretary General of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) for a bilateral ceasefire under international supervision; believes that the international community and the European states in particular, have a responsibility to assist Turkey in choosing the path to a peaceful and secure future, in conformity with their obligations under the United Nations Charter and their commitments within the CSCE; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to urge the Turkish government to accept the terms of the PKK ceasefire proposal and enter immediate negotiations to bring about a lasting peace in the region.
