Design Of Safer Cars
EDM number 77 in 1993-94, proposed by Peter Bottomley on 24/11/1993.
That this House notes with concern that over 500 car-user lives are lost each week in European Community countries; notes that car design is affected fundamentally by European Community legislation; is concerned that key European safety standards are 20 years behind the needs defined by accident research; notes that crash protection measures which minimise the consequences of an impact could reduce 120, 000 fatal and serious injuries in European Community countries annually; notes the recommendations of the European Transport Safety Council in their new report on reducing traffic injury through better car design; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to invite the European Commission to propose amendments to safety standards with important casualty reduction potential to consider new standards in areas not yet covered by legislation and to establish European-wide in-depth accident data bases to encourage future progress.
