Compensation Rights To The Victims Of Terrorism
EDM number 759 in 1993-94, proposed by Harry Barnes on 07/03/1994.
That this House notes with grave concern that, due to the Government's introduction without consultation from 1st April of a cost-cutting system of tariff payments governing compensation under the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme to the victims of crime, victims of terrorism in Britain will benefit from a less generous scheme than operates in Northern Ireland, where compensation takes into account special circumstances such as the loss of earnings suffered by a family after the breadwinner has been injured or killed, medical needs or long-term care; supports the campaign being conducted by the Families Against Intimidation and Terror group on this issue; calls upon the Government to retain the higher Northern Ireland standards in Great Britain for victims of terrorism; and further calls upon the Government to retain the present system until it has consulted widely on a fair compensation scheme for all victims of crime, including those who have suffered at the hands of terrorists.
