REVENUE FROM CHILDREN'S TOBACCO CONSUMPTION AND CHILDREN'S ANTI SMOKING CAMPAIGN

That this House notes that the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys estimates that 842 million cigarettes are smoked each year by children between the ages of 11 and 15 years in the United Kingdom; notes that the excise duty alone collected by the Treasury on that number of cigarettes is Ãº65 million, and that value-added tax additionally increases Treasury resources; further notes that Her Majesty's Government allocated Ãº2.65 million to the Health Education Authority's teenage smoking programmes in 1993-94; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to promote anti-smoking campaigns targeted at children under the age of 16 years through billboards, newspapers, magazines and sports and arts sponsorship, using the income that it derives from children's tobacco consumption.
