Tower Colliery
EDM number 747 in 1993-94, proposed by Ieuan Wyn Jones on 03/03/1994.
That this House deplores the recent actions of British Coal at Tower Colliery, Hirwaun, where output from the pit has been deliberately reduced from one million tonnes to half a million tonnes, resulting in forced redundancies for half the work force; notes that the displaced production has been passed onto open cast mining; regrets that the colliery is now part of the pit review proceedings and that a further reduction in output is being demanded by British Coal which will only lead to more job losses before a management team can be found for the pit; notes that a management buy-out of the pit will not in itself ensure that jobs are safeguarded, and that the most recent job losses from Tower have dealt a heavy blow to the economy of Cynon Valley and surrounding districts; calls on British Coal and the Government to reverse the decision announced on 15th February to make a further cut in production with consequent job losses; and urges them to assure this productive pit and its workforce of a sound future providing for the energy needs of our community.
