CLOSURE OF BEECHAM'S, ST HELENS

That this House is shocked at the precipitate announcement of SmithKline Beecham that they intend to close its St Helens factory and sack its 480 strong workforce thus ending the 150 year old Beecham family association with St Helens; notes with dismay that neither the workforce nor their trades unions, the local authority or the town's honourable Members of Parliament received any prior notice of the closure; further notes that SmithKline Beecham has just announced a 12 per cent. increase in profits to Ãº1.22 billion; and believes that SmithKline Beecham's cavalier treatment of its workforce is just one more example of British companies behaving like World War I generals and treating their workforces like cannon fodder.
