Former Yugoslav Republic Of Macedonia
EDM number 705 in 1993-94, proposed by Edward O'Hara on 01/03/1994.
That this House, noting that the Republic of Greece has suspended trade with the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) through its port of Salonika, recognises that the dispute between Greece and FYROM is neither peripheral nor petty but has deep-rooted historical, cultural and political justifications; calls upon Her Majesty's Government, in conjunction with its European partners, to bring all possible pressure to bear upon the Government of FYROM to resolve the very real problems for Greece which arise from certain articles of its constitution, its choice of national emblem, its insistence on the name of Macedonia and its continuation of irredentist propaganda, all of which in fact deflect attention from the more serious problems which are internal to FYROM and which threaten future security in the Balkans; and hopes that thereby Greece will be enabled to pursue the policies of peace, support and co-operation which it wishes to have with FYROM.
