Northern Ireland Peace Initiatives

EDM number 69 in 1993-94, proposed by Frank Cook on 24/11/1993.

That this House is pleased to note the remarks of the Right honourable Member for Strangford made during the Today programme of 24th November on BBC Radio Four in which he said that the Ulster Unionist Party 'is pleased to have at last a Prime Minister who is prepared to make the Northern Ireland issue number one on his desk at Downing Street'; commends the Right honourable Member for Huntingdon for recognising in such a fashion the dire urgency of the situation in the Province; congratulates the honourable Member for Foyle for hauling the issue so effectively to the top of the national agenda by the courageous initiative taken in engaging Sinn Fein in direct discussions on a path towards peace; congratulates him further and thanks the said honourable Member for his diligent consultation on these matters with the two national governments in Westminster and Dublin; and registers the fervent hope that, after so much futile carnage and needless bloodshed, a lasting and serviceable settlement can be achieved at least on a par with those agreed in the past by Her Majesty's Government with the likes of Jan Smuts, Pandit Nehru, Jomo Kenyatta, Kenneth Kaunda, Kwame Nkruma and Archbishop Makarios.

This motion has been signed by a total of 12 MPs.
