Research Vessel Services, Barry Market Testing Exercise
EDM number 67 in 1993-94, proposed by Rhodri Morgan on 23/11/1993.
That this House is appalled at the looming prospect that the ships owned and operated by the National Environment Research Council at its research vessel services base in Barry, Glamorgan will, via the current market testing exercise, be shortly operated by the James Fisher shipping company, whose name has become notorious in the environmental world for transporting nuclear waste and plutonium around the globe in search of a suitable home on contract to NIREX under the Japanese flag, amongst others, since it would be the supreme irony for research vessels engaged in critical international scientific collaborative ventures to understand how the oceans can help combat global warming and other environmental threats to the planet to be owned and operated by a company engaged in making money from the sea transport of ultra-hazardous nuclear waste cargos, with all the dangers to the marine environment from plutonium accidents posed by this trade.
