Banking Practices
EDM number 632 in 1993-94, proposed by Nigel Griffiths on 17/02/1994.
That this House conveys its deepest sympathy to Mrs Ann Langley and notes that Birmingham coroner Dr Richard Whittington blamed Barclays Bank in Coventry for harrying her late husband over a ú72 overdraft; calls on Barclays to investigate the delay in paying Mr Langley's salary into his account and all other aspects of his case; and calls on Mr Chancellor of the Exchequer to instruct the Banking Ombudsman and the Bank of England as regulator to hold an inquiry into this and to carry out a full investigation into the practices of banks which delay processing cheques and standing orders and into other devices which inflate bank profits and put shareholder interests before service to customers.
