Council Rents In Redbridge And In Barking And Dagenham
EDM number 625 in 1993-94, proposed by Mike Gapes on 16/02/1994.
That this House deplores the announcement of Conservative Redbridge Council that it is increasing its council rents by ú2.45 a week or 4 per cent.; deplores the fact that council rents in Redbridge, which were already the second highest in Britain, will now rise to an average of ú63.75 a week, the highest in the country; further notes that the lowest council rents in London are those in neighbouring Labour-led Barking and Dagenham at ú33.15 a week; and condemns the fact that as a result of local government boundary changes due to come into effect in April some 14 tenants transferring from low-rent Labour Barking and Dagenham to high rent Tory Redbridge face a massive ú34 a week hike in their rents whereas 1,500 tenants transferring the other way will see a phased reduction in their rents thereby showing that Labour councils give better value for money and cost less.
