Leghold Traps

That this House notes that the EC has adopted regulations prohibiting the use of leghold traps across the EC and to ban the import of pelts originating in countries which continue to use leghold or other inhumane traps after 1995; notes further that the International Organisation for Standardisation has charged its Technical Committee 191 to draft internationally agreed humane trapping standards; is concerned that this technical committee and its working groups are unduly influenced by vested interests in the fur trade; and therefore calls upon her Majesty's Government and the British Standards Institute to be vigilant to ensure that these internationally agreed trapping standards are not used to legitimise the leghold trap as a humane way of trapping animals for their pets.
