Steel Action
EDM number 584 in 1993-94, proposed by Elliot Morley on 10/02/1994.
That this House welcomes the setting up of Steel Action, a national all-party group of local authorities representing steel communities throughout England, Scotland and Wales; recognises the threat to the United Kingdom steel industry and steel communities by the current failure to tackle steel overcapacity within the European Union; condemns the refusal by the Humberside County Council Conservative group to join with Conservative groups in Humberside steel communities in supporting Steel Action; assumes Humberside Conservatives have as little regard for steelworkers as government ministers, who have announced the ending of the Iron and Steel Employees Readaption Benefit Scheme that has provided valuable social protection for steel workers made redundant as a result of closures, capacity cuts or changes in activities in United Kingdom steel companies; and believes that these are issues both parties should urgently reconsider.
This motion has been signed by a total of 48 MPs.
