Economic Implications Of Gordon Highlanders Merger

EDM number 583 in 1993-94, proposed by Malcolm Bruce on 10/02/1994.

That this House regrets the actions of the Secretary of State for Scotland in repeatedly refusing requests by representatives of Grampian Regional Council and Save The Gordons to secure a meeting to discuss the social and economic implications of the merger of the Gordon Highlanders with the Queen's Own Highlanders; notes that the Secretary of State for Scotland has declined to discuss the implications of a report published by Grampian Regional Council's economic development and planning department; notes that on three occasions the Secretary of State for Scotland has refused a meeting on the grounds that it would be imprudent to intervene in a defence decision which has already been taken; and calls upon the Secretary of State for Scotland to acknowledge that it is the socio-economic implications of the merger that the delegation wish to discuss, not defence, that this is most definitely an area of his concern and therefore a meeting should be arranged with representatives in the very near future.
