British Gas Wales
EDM number 58 in 1993-94, proposed by Jon Owen Jones on 23/11/1993.
That this House notes with concern the proposed closure of British Gas Wales, placing in jeopardy over 3,000 jobs including 700 at the Helmont House Headquarters in Cardiff; recognises this as an inevitable consequence of rigged competition rules; realises this will result in higher not lower gas bills for most Welsh people as new companies sweep in and cherry-pick lucrative markets; and urges the Secretary of State for Wales to speak up for the people of Wales by informing the President of the Board of Trade of his opposition to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission's proposal to break up British Gas.
This motion has been signed by a total of 49 MPs.
