Conduct Of The Chief Secretary To The Treasury
EDM number 573 in 1993-94, proposed by John Denham on 09/02/1994.
That this House notes that, in a speech to Southampton students on Friday 4th February, the Chief Secretary referred to cases highlighted by the Committee of Public Accounts in the following terms 'one was that a health authority had bought a computer system that didn't work. That was a mistake. It happens in British business all the time'; notes further that the Committee of Public Accounts concluded that the Wessex Regional Health Authority showed inadequate financial controls, inadequate stewardship of public money and assets and failure to provide value for money; and expresses dismay at both the Chief Secretary's complacent attitude towards the waste highlighted by the Committee of Public Accounts and his low opinion of the state of British business.
