Uk, Un, And Relief Work In The Former Yugoslavia
EDM number 560 in 1993-94, proposed by Harry Barnes on 09/02/1994.
That this House notes that, despite terrible suffering, Sarajevo continues to receive about half of its food needs whilst central Bosnia only received 15 per cent. and 14 per cent. in November and December 1993, respectively, with evidence of growing malnutrition; congratulates non-governmental organisations such as Oxfam and others for their continued efforts to deliver humanitarian aid, despite terrible dangers; believes that many of the supply problems to central Bosnia could be overcome if Tuzla airport, one of the largest and best-equipped in the former Yugoslavia, were opened to international relief flights as a major priority; accepts that the humanitarian relief provided by groups such as Oxfam is largely dependent on UN support and protection; believes that any precipitate withdrawal from Bosnia by UN forces would lead to untold distress and suffering and the possibility of the conflict spreading to neighbouring areas; and urges the United Kingdom Government to continue its commitment of military forces to UN operations in the former Yugoslavia for the foreseeable future as a means to safeguarding humanitarian relief operations.
