Harlow Wood Hospital
EDM number 544 in 1993-94, proposed by Alan Meale on 08/02/1994.
That this House expresses its deep concern at the efforts being made by North Nottinghamshire Health Authority to close Harlow Wood Hospital, a well-known centre of excellence in the United Kingdom for orthopaedic treatment and surgery; notes that since the comparatively recent formation of the authority, rumours and counter rumours about possible closure have become the order of the day and contracts either held by the hospital, or ones which would have been expected to be awarded to it, have been lost because of the lack of necessary efforts by its management either to retain or acquire them; notes that these factors have plunged staff morale at the hospital to an all-time low; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to instigate a full independent public inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the present situation at the hospital, to halt any closure consultations already underway, to recognise the fine record of Harlow Wood Hospital as an institution which has successfully treated tens of thousands of patients since its foundation in 1929 by the late Duchess of Portland, and to give assurances to the hospitals staff that they have a place in the nation's health service.
