Electricity Prices And Profits

That this House notes that many people cannot afford to heat their home and congratulates the National Consumer Council for investigating the prices charged and the profits made by the 12 regional electricity companies, Eastern Seeboard, Norweb, Southern, Northern, Midlands, Yorkshire, East Midlands and SWALEC; notes with concern that privatisation has allowed the companies to increase prices by 13 per cent. and profits by 85 per cent., that householders in England and Wales have paid an extra ú650 million simply to cover rising profits and boardroom payouts and that high prices caused a two per cent. drop in electricity consumption; notes that past and present detailed financial figures are kept secret by the electricity companies; and calls on the Minister for Energy to publish all figures and to take action to bring down electricity prices.
