STUDENTS' UNIONS

That this House notes the importance of the role of students' unions in providing services and opportunities for all students; notes that the proposals contained in the Government's Education Bill would weaken the ability of the unions to serve their members; notes the especial importance of the representative role of student unions, and declares that these plans, which run counter to the Government's own Charter for Higher Education, would do great damage to that role; draws attention to the valuable work performed in Wales by the students' unions in introducing the Welsh language and culture to students from all parts of the world; recalls the unanimous opposition within Wales to these proposals of the Education Bill from all sections of Welsh educational life, including the Court of the University of Wales; and calls on the Government to withdraw its proposals.
