Coal Industry Social Welfare Organisation
EDM number 51 in 1993-94, proposed by Alan Meale on 22/11/1993.
That this House recognises that in the current climate of rapid contraction in the coal industry the growing number of colliery closures have caused many and varied problems to mineworkers, ex-mineworkers and their communities; salutes the work of The Coal Industry Social Welfare Organisation established in 1952 to promote and improve the health, social well-being and conditions of mineworkers, former mineworkers and their families; believes that because of these inflicted changes to the coalfield communities' way of life in Britain there is an even greater immediate need for the activities of this fine organisation; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to give a commitment to the long term continuance of CISWO's services to enable this organisation to help mining communities struggling to come to terms with such sudden changes to their traditional way of life and culture.
