Northern Ireland Peace Process

EDM number 506 in 1993-94, proposed by Harry Barnes on 02/02/1994.

That this House believes that the peace process in Northern Ireland, including positive, cross-community responses to the historic British-Irish declaration would be significantly assisted by the overcoming of continuing and festering injustices; believes that one of the major examples of such injustice is the failure completely and generously to exonerate those people who were unlawfully killed in Derry on Bloody Sunday in 1972 and to repudiate the fundamentally flawed report of the Widgery Inquiry which continues to cause grave offence to the families of the victims; further believes that if the Government were to take such actions, it could swiftly provide justice and also undermine those who would cynically exploit this injustice to justify terrorism; recognises that another significant and continuing injustice is the continued detention of Neil Latimer, of the UDR Four, despite the fact that the other three who had been unjustly convicted have been set free and that the original four convictions were interconnected; and calls upon the Government to do its utmost to uphold rigorously the fairest possible standards of justice for all.
