Conduct Of The South Glamorgan Health Authority (No. 3)
EDM number 502 in 1993-94, proposed by Rhodri Morgan on 01/02/1994.
That this House notes the agreement reached by South Glamorgan Health Authority and consultant orthopaedic surgeon Mr Ian Mackie under which all the allegations of gross personal and professional misconduct against the surgeon are dropped; notes that the health authority considered these charges to be so serious as to suspend Ian Mackie from work on full pay since early last summer, but now sees fit to withdraw them unreservedly; notes the remarkable similarity with the Alan Trew case, the Unit Manager of the Cardiff Royal Group of Hospitals, who was dismissed in 1991, but who sued for unfair dismissal and to whom South Glamorgan Health Authority paid a substantial sum of money in compensation on the very morning the industrial tribunal was to commence; and believes that to dismiss and suspend two senior employees in this way, but to drop the case against them on the first day of the tribunal in each case, indicates clearly that South Glamorgan Health Authority is abusing its position as employers and custodians of public money.
