Electricity Prices
EDM number 497 in 1993-94, proposed by Peter Hardy on 01/02/1994.
That this House notes that the statement made by the Electricity Consumers Chairmen's Committee on the high price of electricity confirms the Opposition's expectation that the privatisation arrangements would lead to unnecessarily severe burdens for the consumer; recognises that the interests of those who own and control this industry have enjoyed a scandalously higher priority than those of the consumer, so causing hardship to millions of people and severe disadvantage to many businesses, including the engineering steel industry; calls for immediate reductions in electricity prices to a figure below the levels currently applying and for the withdrawal of the 11 per cent. fossil fuel levy, which has obviously been unfair and is now unjustified; and considers that the actual price of electricity in 1994-95 should be no higher that it is now, even with the deplorable imposition of VAT.
