Accountable Local Government And Historic Local Loyalties

That this House urges the Secretary of State for the Environment to draw a distinction between the need to introduce one-tier local authorities and his statutory duty to cover the map of England with counties by re-introducing the traditional historic counties of England as they were pre-1974 for all purposes other than local government purposes and, in so doing, reflect the community's need for clear, accountable local government and for historic local loyalties.
