BRITAIN'S ROAD PROGRAMME
EDM number 444 in 1993-94, proposed by Nick Harvey on 25/01/1994.
That this House recognises that road traffic is set to double by the year 2025; notes that the Department of Transport has recently established a link between the construction of new roads and the generation of new traffic; further notes that the Secretary of State for Transport has been reported as saying that car growth cannot be allowed to continue unchecked; regrets that at the launch of the Government's environmental strategy for the next 20 years the Prime Minister failed to set any targets or enact any policy which will tackle this growth; and therefore calls upon the Government to announce an immediate moratorium on motorway widening, a comprehensive review of the ú23 billion roads programme, the implementation of measure to limit traffic growth and reduce the number of vehicle journeys on Britain's roads and a commitment to invest in clean, efficient public transport as an attractive alternative to the motor car.
