Scottish Distant Islands Allowance

That this House recognises the distinct and special nature of the remote Scottish islands; believes this to be quite properly represented in the Civil Service Scottish distant islands' allowance; wishes to emphasise that this is quite different and separate from the general issue of recruitment and retention underlying other Civil Service allowances, a difference explicitly acknowledged by Her Majesty's Government in 1975; deplores any attempt now to merge these issues together; and calls upon the Government to reaffirm its commitment to the viability and quality of life of the remote Scottish islands by ensuring that the distant islands' allowance will be retained.
