That this House regrets the proposal to close the Bryant and May match-making factory in Garston, Liverpool, the last match-making factory in the United Kingdom; deplores the inactivity of the Government which failed to take action to protect the jobs of the Bryant and May workforce, most of whom are women; condemns the Government for its disregard of and failure to retain jobs on Merseyside and in particular Liverpool; and calls on the President of the Board of Trade to meet the management and trade unions of Bryant and May to consider an alternative use for the Garston plant that will offer employment opportunities to Bryant and May workers.
