Election Of Lords Lieutenant

EDM number 377 in 1993-94, proposed by Paul Flynn on 19/01/1994.

That this House notes that almost all Lords Lieutenant in England and Wales are white male aristocratic Old Etonian gentiles, ex-military officers and prominent freemasons who own large mansions and are sufficiently rich to do a full-time job without a salary; and calls for appointments to be made every five years by a popular election in order to make the office representative of a wider spectrum of society.
