Emergency Procedures At Rhone-Poulenc, Staveley
EDM number 374 in 1993-94, proposed by Harry Barnes on 18/01/1994.
That this House is concerned about the situation which arose in Staveley in Derbyshire when the disaster siren sounded at 7 p.m. on 17th January from the Rhone-Poulenc Chemical Works; is relieved to find that the siren was sounded accidentally and that there was no danger to the workforce and the public; compliments the fire brigade on its early arrival on the scene once it had been alerted through a telephone call from a public kiosk but deeply regrets the subsequent failure by Rhone-Poulenc and others in authority to inform the public that there was no danger to them, especially as many families had taken precautionary action to protect themselves in line with recommendations made to them in the past; and calls upon Rhone-Poulenc and the relevant emergency services to quickly learn the lessons from this incident and significantly improve their communications system, both amongst themselves and with the public.
