Redundancies At Memory Lane Cakes, Cardiff
EDM number 351 in 1993-94, proposed by Rhodri Morgan on 13/01/1994.
That this House is appalled by the unscrupulous way Memory Lane Cakes of MaesyCoed Road, Llanishen, Cardiff, have evaded the provisions of the Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act 1992 when making 177 employees redundant over the Christmas and New Year period; is dismayed at the ease with which the firm avoided the provisions of the Act requiring that companies proposing redundancies numbering 100 or more provide at least 90 days consultation with the union concerned, by simply announcing the redundancies in two batches of 97 and 80; notes with concern that employees have little protection against their employers adopting such salami tactics; and calls on the Secretary of State for Employment to issue stronger guidelines to large companies concerning this type of evasion and to take steps to reinforce the existing law.
