Work-Related Upper Limb Disorders
EDM number 345 in 1993-94, proposed by Alan Meale on 13/01/1994.
That this House is concerned that almost half a million working days a year in the United Kingdom are being lost because of employees developing upper limb disorders, the cost in human suffering, lost production and sometimes legal action being horrific; congratulates the Trades Union Congress in its work to highlight this problem and its attempts to protect those who suffer such injuries; agrees with its view that a great deal could be done to prevent such accidents including (1) risk assessments being carried out at the workplace, (2) the redesigning of work equipment and processes to more user friendly systems, (3) training of employees in healthy processes, (4) offering of employment protection to sufferers, (5) the development and delivery of better medical treatment, (6) implementing of initiatives and, if all else fails, (7) securing satisfactory compensation for sufferers; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to liaise with the TUC on this matter so that a healthier, fairer, safer and more understanding working environment can exist in Britain for those at work.
