Lejla Ibrahimovic
EDM number 289 in 1993-94, proposed by Lynne Jones on 15/12/1993.
That this House offers its most sincere condolences to the family of Lejla Ibrahimovic, a Bosnian woman who committed suicide in Birmingham on 4th December as a result of her treatment by the British authorities who denied her proper housing and refused to issue her husband, Safet, with a visa notes that Safet has now been granted a visa since her children are now classified as unaccompanied minors; condemns the Home Office for refusing convoy Bosnians specialist help in settling nor allowing them to be reunited with their families; further notes that, despite an announcement by the Home Office on 30th November 1992 that Britain would be accepting 1,000 ex-detainee Bosnians plus their dependents, totalling around 4,000 Bosnians, only 472 Bosnians have been granted asylum as principal beneficaries together with 694 dependents in Britain to date; recognises this is in part due to the over-complex procedure that Bosnians have to go through in order to gain admittance to the United Kingdom; and calls upon the Government go take action to provide help to the convoy Bosnians in the United Kingdom.
