New Job Losses In The Engineering Steel Industry Of South Yorkshire

That this House deplores the further and serious job losses at the Rotherham and Stockbridge works of United Engineering Steels which were announced on 15th December; expresses concern that the major factor in the severe problems faced in this strategically vital sector of industry stem from the unfair practices of the United Kingdom EC partners, Germany and Spain; regrets that Her Majesty's Government has so far proved incapable of responding adequately to this situation, and indeed may have compounded the problem by its approach to the ISERBS programme through the promotion of immediate cuts in United Kingdom employment just when the dominant goal should have been the elimination of grossly unfair practice within the EC rather than jobs in South Yorkshire; and demands that effective action should now be taken to ensure that our high quality engineering steel industry does not suffer further and savage devastation as a consequence of national incompetenece.
